James Wilfred

James Wilfred Upper

Jun 11th 1953 — Sep 11th 2023 (70 years)

Biography

It is with great sadness that we announce that James passed away suddenly on September 11, 2023. Predeceased by his parents, James Sr. (2004) and Ann (2001), and brothers David (2007) and Thomas (2003). Survived by his sister Tracy Joy (Roy Lahti) and several nieces and nephews including Joe Upper who, together with his wife Sheri Kellington and their children Davey and Melody, became his de facto nuclear family in his later years. Also survived by several aunts and uncles, cousins and friends. The family would like to give a special shout-out to James' friend of more than 30 years Frank Canoan, who stayed in contact throughout James’ moves to Saskatchewan and Alberta and offered much needed support upon his return to St. Catharines.

Jimmy (as he was known to his family and friends) was a Renaissance man, well read on myriad subjects and multi-skilled in a variety of fields. He was particularly savvy in figuring out all things mechanical (especially car and motorcycle engines) as well as upholstery. He could design, sew and upholster anything imaginable, whether big or small. And if he couldn't fix something a conventional way, he would creatively MacGyver a workable solution to the problem. This led to some interesting jobs over the years, including customizing stretch limousines for the automotive industry and upholstering airplane seats for an aviation company.

Jimmy marched to the beat of his own drum, often in the opposite direction of the rest of society, but he steadfastly held to his desired course. Despite numerous health challenges over the past decade and a half, he continued to remain optimistic that he would get back up on his feet (literally). We hope that he is now walking freely and unencumbered once again.

In accordance with James' wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service.

If desired, donations in James’ name can be made to Diabetes Canada (Ontario Division).
